Introduction

For this project, I was tasked with creating a tourism logo for a city of my choosing. I chose Copenhagen. Copenhagen is known for its eco-friendly initiatives, technology, architechture, and memorable historical landmarks. It is also the capital city of Denmark. Denmark ranks highest in the world for happiness! This is believed to be linked to danish people's feelings of social equality, individual freedom, and community spirit.

Hygge—the pursuit of everyday happiness—is engrained in Danish culture.

Learn about Hygge

Inspiration

Hygge is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special. To represent this feeling, I sought out real-life inspiration.

The Tivoli Lamp

Historical Relevance

Partaking in hygge can be as simple as finding comfort in a light during Copenhagen's long and dark winters. That sentiment is likened to the invention of the wartime lamps designed for the Tivoli Gardens amusement park. The garden features many attractions to lift the city's spirits. While under German occupation in 1941, Poul Henningsen designed the Tivoli Lamp. These lamps allowed Tivoli Gardens to remain open for folks to safely enjoy until midnight—undetected by overhead aircrafts. These lamps continue to be an icon of Danish design today.

Colorful townhouses lining Nyhavn Harbor

A Stroll Down Nyhavn Harbor

Color Story

Nyhavn is a beautiful spot for locals and visitors to enjoy music, great food, and the view of the canal. The brightly colored townhouses lining the waterfront is what I used as color inspiration to bring liveliness and impact.

Sketches

While sketching, I developed a mark that felt kinetic like the movement of a city and mirrored the geometry of danish architechture.
